Historic Providence Christian Church starts celebrating its 250th anniversary this month with a series of events ending in October.
The celebrations are meant to focus on the history of the United States and this part of North Carolina in addition to the church.
From 2 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 27, a Sunday, the church will hold an event with the theme ?the birth of the United States of America.?
Pastor Darryl Peebles said plans for the event include music and replications of old-fashioned schoolrooms and church meetinghouses.
?We?ll have the cannon coming from Alamance Battleground and they?re going to fire the cannon,? Peebles said.
February: Court for Orange County.
March: The birth of Alamance County.
April: The birth of Graham.
May: The beginning of Elon College and Elon.
June: The Providence Memorial Cemetery families.
July: The public library system.
August: Development of churches and the religious community.
September: Funding public education.
October: Providence Church celebrates.
Providence Church, which began meeting in 1763, is significantly older than Alamance County, which was formed in 1849. Plans for the new county were made at the church. The church previously served as the site for court sessions in Orange County.
In 1888, a meeting at the church got plans under way for the founding of Elon College, later Elon University.
The church is continuing plans to improve its facilities. People who would like more information about those plans or the anniversary celebration are asked to call the church at 336-228-1974. Donations should be sent to Historic Providence Christian Church, P.O. Box 405, Graham, N.C. 27253-0405, with ?Preservation Fund? written on the memo line.
