The only thing brighter than the glowing yellow shoes and socks on the EMU players was their smiles after Eastern Michigan knocked off Big Ten Purdue Saturday afternoon at The Convocation Center in Ypsilanti.
The Eagles used a big second half, in which they made five three-pointers, to knock off the Boilermakers 47-44. It was EMU's first win over a Big Ten team since?a victory over Michigan on Dec. 17, 1997.??
EMU improves to 6-2 on the season while Purdue falls to 4-5 overall.
Derek Thompson led the Eagles with eight points. J.R. Sims had seven.
Purdue was led by Terone Johnson with 12 points.
EMU outscored Purdue 12-1 in points off turnovers. The Boilermakers lost despite outrebounding EMU 51-33. They also lost because they shot just 29 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 18 times to EMU?s five turnovers.
?It?s frustrating, because we feel like we continue to beat ourselves,? said Purdue coach Matt Painter. ?I?ve never lost a game in 20 years in which the opposition didn?t have a scorer in double figures. But we are going to set records.?
Playing bigger schools is a way to improve and prepare for the conference schedule ahead. Beating bigger schools is a whole different ballgame.
With 58 seconds left in the game and EMU clinging to a 46-44 lead with the ball, EMU coach Rob Murphy called a time out. This wasn?t the time for a young team to lose focus and direction. The Eagles didn?t get off a very good look, giving the ball back to Purdue with a chance to tie or win.

After a triple from Purdue?s Anthony Johnson, Jalen Ross drilled a three-pointer for the Eagles on their next trip down the floor to answer. With 8:24 to go in the game, Daylen Harrison hit a three-pointer to push EMU?s lead to double digits at 44-34.
A triple by Thompson extended the EMU lead to 37-28 with 11:13 to play in the game. The senior guard came around a screen, barely set his feet, turned and fired a shot that hit all net, forcing the Boilermakers to call a time out.
With the game tied 26-26, EMU started to hit their groove. Glenn Bryant knocked down a triple to give the Eagles a 29-26 lead with 17:30 to play in the game. Two minutes later, J.R. Sims hit a three to push the lead to 32-28.
EMU took its first lead of the game in the first minute of the second half on a three-pointer by Derek Thompson to make it 22-20 in favor of the home team.
The first half was a struggle on the offensive end for both teams. EMU made just 1 of 6 free throws, including several front ends of one-and-one opportunities.
