land rush.- General Real Estate and Real Estate Finance ...

Another aspect of westward migration was the Gubmint issuing 'land patents' to people. People decided to settle on gubmint owned land, typically 160 acres, and agreed to 'work' the land for a period of time - 5 years was common. At the end of the period, if it could be shown that the terms were met, a deed to the land was issued, turning it into private property.

One reason this was done was to prevent the slavery culture from expanding farther west.

The street abutting my property is named for the man who had the first patent on this and the surrounding property back in the 1870's or so.
