Dispatches From the Republican National Convention

Sure, yes, the floor of the convention is not the place to get a cold-eyed view of how a speech is playing to Real America. I just thought that Ann Romney was rhetorically effective for the same reason a soft-focus magazine profile might be effective. Tuna fish, pasta, ironing board?banal details that make you feel like you know this person. She's Just Like Us!

If it turns out to be a bust, it'll be because it was one of the thousand or so Romney "memes" that really, really impresses the campaign and the base, and sounds weird to the non-aligned. The whole idea that being a mother is hard?not to circle back on vocab already, but a very banal idea?is a callback to Hilary Rosen's late-night CNN comment that Ann Romney had "never worked a day in her life." The Romney campaign pounced on that immediately with thematic bumper stickers ("Moms build America," I think) and a days-long argument about how liberals disrespect women. It was strange. But so was the outrage over Obama's "build that" comment, which?in a mutilated form?was the theme of the night.

This was all just the pre-game, you realize. Right? I'd expect Paul Ryan's remarks tonight to make a few feints toward Medicare boldness (i.e., reform that promises never to cut anything for current, Republican-voting seniors) but a lot more about his hardscrabble upbringing and his fishing/hunting hobbies. It probably won't be as defensive as Palin in 2008?remember how some mysterious force emanating from Chicago was disrespecting "small towns"??but it'll carry on the subtle, smart strategy of presuming that liberals don't understand families or real work.

Spine Health: Lumbar Support | San Antonio Informer

By Dr. Donald A. Ozello DC

Las Vegas Informer

Support your spine while sitting to improve your spinal health. Utilize lumbar support in your office chair or car to lessen pressure on your spine.

In medical terminology the lower back is named the lumbar spine. The lumbar spine possesses five vertebrae and a natural forward curvature. When sitting in proper posture the posterior aspect of the forward curved lumbar spine does not make contact with the chair.

When placed properly between the lumbar spine and the chair a lumbar support pillow provides a greater amount of surface area contact. The larger amount of the lower back that contacts the lumbar support helps maintain correct posture and prevent fatigue.

High quality lumbar support pillows contain memory foam. Memory foam contours to the shape of user?s spine while providing support throughout the entire lumbar spine.

Lumbar supports come in multiple shapes and sizes. Many lumbar support pillows are convex in the front and flat in the back. This ideal shape perfectly fills in the natural gap between the lumbar spine and the chair.

Office chairs and car seats often have lumbar support built in. Set these built-in supports at the correct height with the proper amount of forward curvature for optimum results.

Proper sitting ergonomics is vital to the prevention and management of repetitive strain injuries and static position injuries. Proper lumbar support is a key ingredient to computer work station ergonomics.

When the lumbar spine is supported it is easier to maintain proper posture. When a lumbar support is utilized the user will immediately feel if the pillow shifts thus alerting him to reposition himself back into good posture. When the lower back is supported properly it is more difficult to move the middle back and neck into poor posture.

The human body is designed for motion, not long hours of sitting. Unfortunately, prolonged sitting at the computer work station or in the car have become a way of life. Utilize a lumbar support pillow or the built in lumbar support to prevent pain and symptoms.

Proper lumbar support is the foundation of correct sitting posture. Build a solid base to support your spine while sitting.

Incorporate lumbar support into your spinal health strategies to prevent and manage sitting-related injuries. Merge proper sitting ergonomics with exercise, nutrition and chiropractic care to achieve and maintain spinal strength, flexibility, motion and health.

(AP) ? A gunman who killed a former co-worker in cold blood in the shadow of the Empire State Building and then was shot dead by police after he turned his gun on them spent long hours in the quiet of Central Park, photographing hawks and marveling over nature's beauty.

His victim was a gregarious salesman, beloved by his nieces and nephews as the fun uncle who could talk with equal expertise about the New York Jets and the women's fashion accessories he sold.

Investigators on Saturday were trying to piece together what caused Jeffrey Johnson, a T-shirt designer, to ambush Steve Ercolino, an apparel company vice president, a day earlier outside the Manhattan offices of the company where they once were colleagues.

Police said Johnson hid behind a car and then killed Ercolino with five gunshots as he arrived for work. Johnson then was shot by two police officers who confronted him on a busy sidewalk.

Security camera footage showed the officers had only an instant to react when Johnson suddenly turned as they approached and pointed his gun at them, his arm cocked as if to fire.

Their encounter was over in eight seconds. The officers, who had been standing nearly close enough to shake hands with Johnson and had no opportunity to take cover, fired almost immediately.

Nine bystanders were wounded in the 16-shot volley, all by stray or ricocheting police bullets, police confirmed Saturday. None of their injuries was life-threatening, police said.

Police investigating Johnson's killing of Ercolino were eyeing bad blood between them from when they worked together at Hazan Import, a garment district business where Ercolino was a vice president of sales.

Johnson and Ercolino had traded harassment accusations when they worked together, police said, and when Johnson was laid off from the company a year ago he blamed Ercolino, saying he hadn't aggressively marketed his new T-shirt line.

After Johnson's layoff, neighbors said, he continued to leave his apartment every day in a suit.

Internet records listed Johnson as the administrator of the website for a business called St. Jolly's Art, which sold iron-on graphic art for T-shirts. Art for sale on the site included stylized drawings of fighter planes and muscle cars and whimsical "seafaring vignettes" featuring pirate maidens and tall ships.

Johnson also was part of a community of bird watchers and photographers who document hawks and other wildlife living in Central Park, a few blocks from his home.

In one email to another bird watcher who works at The Associated Press, Johnson wrote tenderly about spending a winter night watching ducks in the park.

"Near midnight by the Harlem Meer I watched a little 'flotilla' of Mallards swimming and softly honking ... fifteen degree temp and they were carrying on unfazed. Just remarkable," he wrote.

His photographs of Central Park's hawk population appeared regularly on blogs tracking the birds.

A neighbor who often saw Johnson, 58, said he was always alone.

"I always felt bad," said Gisela Casella, who lived a few floors above Johnson in a modest apartment building on the Upper East Side. "I said, 'Doesn't he have a girlfriend?' I never saw him with anybody."

Ercolino, 41, was described by his relatives as the opposite of a quiet loner.

His eldest brother, Paul Ercolino, said he was a gregarious salesman who often traveled, had a loving girlfriend and was the life of any family gathering.

"He was in the prime of his life," he said. "He would do anything for anybody at any time. ... He was so wonderful with my children. At Christmastime, he was the one who always had the best presents for the kids."

Paul Ercolino said his brother, known to nieces and nephews as Uncle Ducky because of his nearly blond hair, had followed his father into the garment industry after growing up in Nanuet, just north of New York City, then later worked in women's handbags and accessories. He said his brother had never mentioned to the family that he had any problems with a co-worker.

Hazan Import Corp. executives didn't return phone calls seeking comment Friday.

Johnson, after waiting for Steve Ercolino to come to work, walked up to him, pulled out a .45-caliber pistol and fired at his head, police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. After Ercolino fell to the ground, Johnson stood over him and shot four more times, a witness told investigators.

"Jeffrey just came from behind two cars, pulled out his gun, put it up to Steve's head and shot him," said Carol Timan, whose daughter, Irene Timan, was walking to Hazan Imports at the time with Ercolino.

In security camera footage released by the police, Johnson can be seen walking calmly down the sidewalk after the shooting, distancing himself slightly from the other pedestrians, who appear to have no awareness that anything is wrong.

But when two police officers approach in a hurry, Johnson turns and pulls a handgun from a bag. Then, the scene explodes into action. People seated on a bench behind the gunman and pedestrians standing close to the two officers run for their lives.

Only a young child seems not to react, strolling out of view of the camera as adults all around leap away in terror.

Startled New Yorkers later looked up from their morning routines in the crowded business district to see people sprawled in the streets bleeding and a tarp covering a body in front of the tourist landmark.

"I was on the bus, and people were yelling 'Get down! Get down!" accountant Marc Engel said. "I was thinking, 'You people are crazy. No one is shooting in the middle of midtown Manhattan at 9 o'clock in the morning.'"

It was over in seconds, he said ? "a lot of pop, pop, pop, pop, one shot after the other."

Afterward, he saw sidewalks littered with the wounded, including one man "dripping enough blood to leave a stream."

The officers who fired were part a detail regularly assigned to patrol landmarks such as the 1,454-foot-tall skyscraper since the Sept. 11 attacks, officials said.

Kelly, the police commissioner, said the officers who confronted Johnson had "a gun right in their face" and "responded quickly, and they responded appropriately."

"These officers, having looked at the tape myself, had absolutely no choice," he said.

A witness had told police that Johnson fired at the officers, but authorities say ballistics evidence doesn't support that. Johnson's gun held seven rounds, they said. He fired five times at Ercolino, one round was still in the gun and one was ejected when officers secured it, authorities said.

A loaded magazine was found in Johnson's briefcase.

Johnson legally bought the gun in Sarasota, Fla., in 1991, but he didn't have a permit to possess it in New York City, authorities said.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said New York still is the safest big city in the country, on pace to have a record low number of murders this year.

"But we are not immune to the national problem of gun violence," he said of the shooting, following mass shootings at a Colorado movie theater and a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

The nine people wounded outside the Empire State Building were all from New York City, except for a woman from Chapel Hill, N.C. They suffered graze wounds or other minor injuries.

Metal detectors and bag searchers have been standard at the Empire State Building since 1997, when a gunman opened fire on the 86th-floor observation deck, killing one tourist and wounding six others before fatally shooting himself.

The skyscraper remained open Friday throughout the mayhem, although its workers became witnesses.

"We were just working here and we just heard bang, bang, bang!" said Mohammed Bachchu, a worker at a nearby souvenir shop.

He said he rushed from the building and saw seven people lying on the ground, covered in blood.

Rebecca Fox said she saw people running down the street and initially thought it was a celebrity sighting, but then she saw a woman shot in the foot and a man dead on the ground.

"I was scared and shocked and literally shaking," she said. "It was like 'CSI,' but it was real."

Celtics' Fab Melo Begins NBA Career by Breaking a Chair During Rookie Shoot

Make note of Fab Melo as he embarks on what should be a magical NBA career, because the young man is already making us laugh.?

Larry Brown Sports spots this brief moment of hilarity featuring the rookie who accidentally broke a folding chair and was subsequently laughed at by every other rookie around because of it.? Pretty much the moment Melo was trying to act cool and unaffected, his chair managed to break, causing him to be the geek on the first day of school.

Lovely.?

The folding chair fiasco happened during a photo shoot for rookies and pretty much made Melo feel like he was possibly pushing too many pounds.?

That's the first thing he wanted to dispel to an NBA.com correspondent shortly after being laughed off the ground by other NBA youngsters: "I think the chair was too weak and an accident happened. I lost weight. I?m good now. I know that I gained weight (before). But yeah, the chair fell."

Seriously, guys. I'm not fat.?

There is nowhere to go but up after your chair breaks under your own weight. It's best to shake it off and own the embarrassing moment. Because there is no getting back any amount of cool points lost in this hilarious turn of events.?

Simple Internet Marketing Advice To Help You Beat Your Competition

A lot of businesses rely on Internet marketing since it is both efficient and affordable. From online newsletters to static websites, it is so simple to use the Internet to market your product. Research the many forms of Internet marketing strategies before embarking on your journey.

A niche or unique subject should be used on your website. This will likely be a large driver of traffic for the people specifically looking for this product. Visitors are then likely to check out everything else your site has to offer, increasing your legitimacy and quite possibly boosting your page ranking as well.

You should always take time to investigate the strategies of your competitors. Analyze the other websites and identify what improvements could be made to them. Capitalizing on the weakness of your competition by promoting your own ability compared to the lack of theirs will help distinguish you in the eyes of would be customers.

Figure out a way to find a service you can offer to your users for free on your website. People will visit just to take advantage of the free offer and they may stick around for a while if the site catches their eye. Many business accomplish this by providing a free calculation tool relevant to the product for sale.

Look at Internet marketing as something fun and not something that is a job or big chore. If you?re good at it, then you can think of it as a career, but initially, it should be for fun.

Hold events and promotions to gain more traffic. Put one of your e-books on sale for a dollar for one or two days. When people enter your site to purchase the e-book, they?ll probably look around at what else you offer. More often than not, these people will leave with more than just the e-book you put on sale.

Get frequent feedback. This is important because your perception and assessment of how your website appears may not be how it appears to others. Ask for feedback from those people that visit your website or even friends and family. Take their advice into consideration prior to changing anything you deem necessary.

Here are some tips on internet marketing. Be sure to have a clear objective on your landing page. The landing page should be focused on sales. The viewer should be able to clearly tell what you are selling. You only have one opportunity to hold the attention of the reader, so if you make things complicated, they are bound to leave again.

If you have a database that contains information regarding your customers you can use that to make the most of your Internet advertising. This will help you keep track of your customers so you will be able to effectively market towards your various customer groups. These customers can further be targeted by tailoring personal correspondence that promotes products that accessorize or complement those that they?ve already purchased.

Finding information on effective marketing strategies does not have to cost a fortune. Many free resources are readily available. You can join online business communities, read marketing blogs, attend local business development seminars and conferences, and download and study e-books.

Internet marketing really does not need to be complicated or confusing. Use the advice you have read there to make yourself more visible online and target your campaign to your customer base. Many people do much of their communicating online via email and other venues, making the Internet an optimal method for businesses to use.

Interpreting some of Twitter?s API changes

? ? ?

Twitter has posted some of their upcoming API-policy lockdowns and restrictions in this post from Michael Sippey, euphemistically titled ?Changes coming in Version 1.1 of the Twitter API?.

First, from Twitter?s Display Guidelines, which will become requirements for all apps:

?Individual Tweet? section

Embedding tweets in a blog post in any way other than their dynamic embed code is effectively prohibited:

[3a] Reply, Retweet, and Favorite action icons must always be visible for the user to interact with the Tweet.

[5b] ?The Twitter logo or Follow button for the Tweet author must always be displayed in the top right corner.

I?m pretty sure this means that I can?t just display a tweet as a link and blockquote when I want to quote it here.

Sending links to Instapaper or its clones, viewing a tweet on Favstar, and certainly sharing links to tweets on other social services is probably prohibited:

[3b] No other social or 3rd party actions may be attached to a Tweet.

Whether email clients (?Email link?) and web browsers (?Open in Safari?) count as third-party actions is yet to be determined.

Zooming full-sized pic.twitter.com images in their own windows or screens is probably prohibited:

[6b] pic.twitter.com images may not be detached and displayed separately from the Tweet.

That also seems to prohibit apps that render only photos, such as gallery or photo-browsing apps. And it might create a Twitpic-ownership-like issue.

?Timelines? section

Rule groups 1?4 dictate tweet layout with very little flexibility. Timelines in all conforming clients will look extremely similar.

Rule 5a is far-reaching:

[5a] Tweets that are grouped together into a timeline should not be rendered with non-Twitter content. e.g. comments, updates from other networks.

In other words, apps cannot interleave chronological groups of Twitter posts with anything else.

This is very broad and will bite more services and apps than you may expect. It?s probably the clause that caused the dispute with LinkedIn, and why Flipboard CEO Mike McCue just left Twitter?s board.

Closer to home for me, it affects Instapaper?s ?Liked By Friends? browsing feature, which will need to be significantly rewritten if I want it to comply. (If.)

Naturally, this also prohibits any client from interleaving posts from Twitter and App.net, or any other similar service, into a unified timeline.

?Requiring developers to work with us directly?

The rest of the ?Changes? post is full of bad news for developers:

One of the key things we?ve learned over the past few years is that when developers begin to demand an increasingly high volume of API calls, we can guide them toward areas of value for users and their businesses. To that end, and similar to some other companies, we will require you to work with us directly if you believe your application will need more than one million individual user tokens.

How, exactly, will Twitter ?guide? developers who are required to ?work with them directly?? What exactly are ?areas of value for users and [our] businesses??

Translation: ?Once you get big enough for us to notice, we?re going to require you to adhere to more strict, unpublished rules to make sure you don?t compete with us or take too much value from our network.?

And ?big enough? might not be as big as you think:

Additionally, if you are building a Twitter client application that is accessing the home timeline, account settings or direct messages API endpoints (typically used by traditional client applications) or are using our User Streams product, you will need our permission if your application will require more than 100,000 individual user tokens.

Instapaper?s ?Liked By Friends? feature reads timelines and will need more than 100,000 tokens. And that?s a relatively minor feature in a small web service run by one guy.

We will not be shutting down client applications that use those endpoints and are currently over those token limits. If your application already has more than 100,000 individual user tokens, you?ll be able to maintain and add new users to your application until you reach 200% of your current user token count (as of today) ? as long as you comply with our Rules of the Road. Once you reach 200% of your current user token count, you?ll be able to maintain your application to serve your users, but you will not be able to add additional users without our permission.

Got a successful Twitter app or Twitter-integrated service already? Either ?work with? Twitter quickly and make whatever changes they require before you get too many more users, or shut down.

Finally, there may also be additional changes to the Rules of the Road to reflect the functional changes in version 1.1 of the Twitter API that we?ve outlined here.

There will definitely be more rules that we?re not ready to discuss yet, possibly because we haven?t decided what they are yet, or possibly because we know you?re not going to like them.

For instance, I bet this is finally how clients will be required to display tweet ads. That requirement, probably worded roughly as ?you must display every tweet in a timeline, and display them all consistently?, will also kill any clients? filter and mute features.

Twitter for Mac and iPad

Twitter for iPhone has been thoroughly gutted of any traces of its Tweetie origins, and it?s clearly Twitter?s premiere client. (It probably gets more usage than their website.)

But Twitter?s own Mac and iPad apps, both also acquired as versions of Tweetie, haven?t been meaningfully updated in many months. Both lack significant features and have glaring bugs, and neither of them comply with the Display ?Guidelines?.

Twitter?s inaction on these apps suggests that they?re probably going to be either discontinued entirely (most likely for Mac) or gutted and replaced with an interface more like their iPhone app (most likely for iPad).

Subjectivity and uncertainty

Twitter has left themselves a lot of wiggle-room with the rules. Effectively, Twitter can decide your app is breaking a (potentially vague) rule at any time, or they can add a new rule that your app inadvertently breaks, and revoke your API access at any time.

Of course, they?ve always had this power. But now we know that they?ll use it in ways that we really don?t agree with.

Anil Dash wants us to compare this to Apple?s App Store review process (while not using App.net if we?re white geeks, or something like that). The amount of power Twitter has over developers is similar to the App Store setup, but the incentives are completely different.

Many uses of Twitter?s platform compete with Twitter on some level. Twitter doesn?t need a lot of its nontrivial apps, and in fact, they?d be happier if most of them disappeared. Twitter?s rules continue to tighten to permit developers to add value to Twitter (mostly ?Share on Twitter? features) but not get nearly as much out of it (e.g. piggyback on the social graph, display timelines, analyze aggregate data).

By comparison, Apple needs its apps much more than Twitter does, and Apple?s interests conflict much less with its developers?. Even its famous anticompetitive rules, such as the prohibition against ?duplicating existing functionality?, have been minimally enforced and have actually diminished over time.

Furthermore, we know pretty well how Apple will behave and what sort of rules we?ll need to follow in the future. They?ve been consistent since the App Store?s launch. But Twitter has proven to be unstable and unpredictable, and any assurances they give about whether something will be permitted in the future have zero credibility.

I sure as hell wouldn?t build a business on Twitter, and I don?t think I?ll even build any nontrivial features on it anymore.

And if I were in the Twitter-client business, I?d start working on another product.

(AP) ? Melky Cabrera's 50-game suspension comes just as reliever Guillermo Mota is nearing his return to the Giants from a 100-game performance-enhancing drug penalty of his own.

Yes, San Francisco now accounts for two of the four suspensions this season under the major league drug program ? and suddenly the Giants are back in the spotlight for performance-enhancing drugs several years after the club had finally moved forward from the Mitchell Report and BALCO mess.

"Unfortunately, these things happen in baseball," manager Bruce Bochy said. "There's not a lot you can do about it. I guess the best thing we can do is keep educating players so these things don't happen. I can't dwell on these things."

Cabrera, the 28-year-old MVP of last month's All-Star game, was suspended 50 games Wednesday following a positive test for testosterone. That puts an abrupt end to what had been a remarkable regular season and throws the Giants' playoff hopes into doubt.

"Ultimately, it was just a bad decision," catcher Buster Posey said. "That's all I'm going to say."

Cabrera leads the National League with 159 hits, and is second in batting average behind Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen. Cabrera's penalty was the first for a high-profile player since last year's NL MVP, Ryan Braun, had his suspension overturned by an arbitrator last winter.

"My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used," Cabrera said in a statement released by the players' association. "I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and I will try to move on with my life. I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down."

The Giants are no stranger to such cases.

Home run king Barry Bonds, who was in the stands for a 6-4 loss to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday as the Giants played Day 1 of Cabrera's suspension, has long denied ever knowingly using steroids or performance-enhancing drugs and the 48-year-old slugger appealed his obstruction of justice conviction from April 2011 on one count of giving an evasive answer to a 2003 grand jury investigating illegal steroids distribution.

In the spring of 2010, former San Francisco outfielder Marvin Benard admitted he used steroids during the team's 2002 World Series season to deal with a nagging knee injury.

Benard was among the 85 players named in the Mitchell Report, handled by former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, which was released in December 2007.

Specifically, he was named in sections on BALCO ? the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative ? as having obtained "the clear" and "the cream" from trainer Greg Anderson.

Now, the current Giants will try to make up for the lost production of the "Melk Man," as he became known.

The suspension would extend into the playoffs if the Giants advance.

"It happened, and now we move on," right fielder Hunter Pence said. "I know the program and I know they test us, and if we test positive we get a suspension. That's what happened. And now we play with what we've got."

Cabrera is batting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs in his first season with San Francisco and is five hits shy of 1,000 in his big league career. Flashing bright orange spikes, he singled and hit a two-run homer off Texas pitcher Matt Harrison last month in the National League's 8-0 win in the All-Star game, earning MVP honors for the game and securing homefield advantage in the World Series for the National League.

"When I give up a homer, it's a bad pitch. I don't think it really helps them hit home runs or singles, doubles or triples," Harrison said. "It was a bad pitch over the plate. But it's going to cost him now. ... He's having to pay the consequences for it now. At least he was honest and came forward about it and said he took something he wasn't supposed to do."

Cabrera is set to become a free agent after this season, so he might have cost himself a big pay day for next season and beyond.

"It's disappointing. Obviously, Melky means a lot to all of us, was part of our championship and provided some really good moments here," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Cabrera, who spent 2005-09 in the Bronx. "It's something that everyone has to deal with and it's something baseball is trying to stay away from and it happened."

Cabrera could still win the NL batting title. He has 501 plate appearances, one less than the minimum required to win a batting championship for a player on a team playing 162 games. However, under 10.22(a) of the Official Baseball Rules, he would win the batting title if an extra hitless at-bat is added to his average and it remains higher than that of any other qualifying player.

He will miss the final 45 games of the regular season and serve the remainder of the suspension at the start of next season or during the postseason, depending on whether the Giants make the playoffs and how far they advance. If the Giants wanted him to become active in the middle of a playoff series, they would have to play a man short from the start of the series until the suspension ends because rosters can't be altered mid-series.

"We fully support Major League Baseball's policy and its efforts to eliminate performance-enhancing drugs from our game," the Giants said in a statement.

Mota received a 100-game suspension in May. He is eligible to return Aug. 28, barring rainouts, and began a minor league rehabilitation assignment Tuesday with the Giants' rookie team in Arizona.

It was not immediately known whether Cabrera's positive test occurred before the All-Star game, his first career selection. The union initially filed a grievance, which would have caused the case to go before an arbitrator, but then dropped it, a person familiar with the process said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because that detail was not announced.

Cabrera told CSN Bay Area on July 27 that he had been tested for performance-enhancing drugs the previous week, though it's unknown whether the test he referenced resulted in the positive test.

Bochy broke the news to his team in a meeting about 90 minutes before the start of Wednesday's game after initially writing Cabrera into the lineup in left field and batting third. Bochy and general manager Brian Sabean met briefly with Cabrera.

"Melky, he was hurt by it," Bochy said. "It's obvious he was disappointed."

Drug-testing labs check urine for its ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone, which usually is 1 to 1 in adult males. If the lab notices any abnormality, it conducts an isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) test to determine whether the testosterone is exogenous, or came from outside the body.

In the other two major league suspensions this year, Philadelphia infielder Freddy Galvis and free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd also were penalized 50 games apiece. There have been 70 suspensions under the minor league drug program.

In mid-May, MLB and the players' union agreed to drop the 100-game suspension imposed on Colorado catcher Eliezer Alfonzo for a positive drug test because of the same procedural issues that came up in Braun's case. Alfonzo missed 48 games ? the final 15 of last season and the first 33 this year.

Braun's 50-game suspension for a positive test was overturned in February by arbitrator Shyam Das after Braun's lawyers argued his urine sample was not handled in the manner specified by baseball's drug agreement. Das, who had been baseball's permanent arbitrator since 1999, was fired this spring.

The Braun case led to revisions in the drug agreement between owners and the players' association to better define procedures for handling the urine samples.

Last December, slugger Manny Ramirez received a 50-game suspension for a second positive drug test. The 12-time All-Star signed a one-year minor league contract with the Oakland Athletics on Feb. 20, but was released in June per his request while playing for Triple-A Sacramento before even reaching the big leagues with the A's.

Ramirez retired from the Tampa Bay Rays in April 2011 rather than serve a 100-game suspension for a second failed drug test. The penalty was cut to 50 games because he sat out nearly all of last season.

Cabrera, who became a marketing phenomenon this year with nicknames like "Got Melk?" ''Melk Man" and "Melky Way," produced a 51-hit month in May. He batted .429 in May with three homers, five triples, seven doubles and 17 RBIs while hitting safely in 25 of 29 games. The 51 hits matched Randy Winn for most hits in a month since the club came to San Francisco in 1958.

Cabrera also set the San Francisco record for most hits in May, passing Hall of Famer Willie Mays' 49 from 1958.

Cabrera came to the Giants in a trade with Kansas City last November that sent left-hander Jonathan Sanchez to the Royals. Cabrera ? who signed a $6 million, one-year deal to avoid salary arbitration ? batted .305 with 44 doubles, 18 homers and 87 RBIs last season.

"We are a team. We're trying to make the playoffs," Pablo Sandoval said. "We're going to fight."

Correction: Heart Treatment story

(AP) ? In an Aug. 7 story about concerns about the overtreatment of patient chest pain, The Associated Press erroneously reported the number of angioplasties performed annually in the U.S. The procedure is done about 700,000 times each year, not about 7 million times.

A corrected version of the story is below:

HCA probe shines light on chest pain overtreatment

Overtreating chest pain is in the spotlight as investigators probe procedures at HCA hospitals

An investigation into one of the nation's biggest hospital chains is refocusing attention on concerns about overtreatment for chest pain.

Many doctors are unclogging arteries to treat the pain, providing quick relief. However, studies have shown medicine is a safer and cheaper alternative for patients whose heart disease isn't life-threatening.

That research has changed thinking about the wisdom of routinely doing the artery-opening procedures called angioplasties. But experts say money and uncertainty over individual patients' risks are among reasons doctors have been slower to change their ways.

The Nashville-based hospital chain, HCA Holdings Inc., said on Monday that investigators want information about heart procedures performed at some of its 163 hospitals. A New York Times story suggests some patients got needless angioplasties and stents.

About 700,000 angioplasties are done each year, and almost half of them are elective, performed on patients with stable chest pain. Evidence suggests the numbers haven't dropped dramatically since a landmark 2007 study said drug treatment worked just as well at preventing heart attacks and related deaths.

An angioplasty can cost $20,000 and usually involves inserting a small mesh stent to keep arteries propped open. Often an overnight hospital stay is needed. Drug treatment may take a few months to relieve pain and often requires several medicines, including aspirin and statins, but most have generic versions costing hundreds of dollars a year, not thousands.

Patients often want the quicker fix, and Yale University cardiologist Harlan Krumholz says many patients mistakenly think elective angioplasties will do a better job of keeping them alive.

Doctors may disagree with the studies and recommend angioplasties, but they are obliged "to explain to patients that their opinion is at odds with what the evidence is," Krumholz said Tuesday.

According to the New York Times, citing internal HCA documents, some of the hospital chain's patients got invasive treatment even though they had no significant heart disease.

Nationwide data suggest that about 8 percent of non-emergency angioplasties are done inappropriately, on patients who should be getting drug treatment alone instead, said Dr. William Weintraub, cardiology chief at Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Del.

Needless stenting was among procedures to be avoided on a checklist released earlier this year by nine medical societies concerned about overtreatment.

Determining which patients should get angioplasties and who shouldn't isn't always clear-cut, Weintraub said. Heart disease is the nation's No. 1 killer and leading cause of disability, and the decision-making "is very, very difficult to do," he said.

But if patients without any artery blockages got angioplasties and stents, "that's clear-cut fraud, that's criminal," Weintraub said.

Dr. Sanjay Kaul, a cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles, says he has estimated that about $3 billion could be saved each year nationwide under scenarios that include limiting angioplasties to patients who don't respond to pills.

A payment system that reimburses doctors for the number of tests and procedures they do is part of the problem, said Dr. Steven Nissen, a Cleveland Clinic cardiologist. "The more procedures they do, the more they are paid. That system creates incentives do to medical procedures, whether it's a CT scan, or a stent, or a knee replacement. Across the board, Americans undergo more procedures than other people."

HCA posted a four-page letter on the home page of its website Monday, saying the New York Times "appears to be making broad points concerning patient care provided at our company's affiliated hospitals." It also says that decisions about the need for some heart procedures are "the subject of much debate in the cardiology community."

The price of HCA shares fell 4 percent Monday, after the company posted a letter about a possible New York Times story on its website. The stock then rebounded to climb nearly 5 percent in Tuesday afternoon trading, performing better than the broader market.

Jefferies & Co. analyst Arthur I. Henderson said investors think the issue may not be as significant as it seemed at first glance.

Henderson, whose firm has no stake in HCA and does no banking business with them, said the hospital operator has a "very robust" compliance program.

Don't Trust 'Dr. Google' for Help on Infant Sleep Safety

FRIDAY, Aug. 3 (HealthDay News) -- New research suggests that parents shouldn't trust a Google search for accurate information on infant sleep safety.

These Web searches commonly turned up results that contradicted current recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics aimed at reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), suffocation, strangulation and other accidental sleep-related deaths, the study found.

What is particularly worrisome, the researchers said, is that 72 percent of adults say they trust most or all of the health information they find on the Internet.

The study was published Aug. 2 in the Journal of Pediatrics.

"It is important for health care providers to realize the extent to which parents may turn to the Internet for information about infant sleep safety and then act on that advice, regardless of the reliability of the source," Dr. Rachel Moon, pediatrician and SIDS researcher at Children's National Medical Center, Washington, D.C., said in a journal news release.

Moon and her team used Google, the leading Internet search engine in the United States, to test the accuracy of information on infant sleep safety available on the Web.

They performed the Google searches using 13 key phrases based on specific recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics on infant sleep safety. The researchers analyzed the top 100 search results for each phrase, which included a total 1,300 websites.

According to the study, 43.5 percent of the websites provided accurate information. But just over 28 percent of the search results provided inaccurate information, and about the same number provided information that had nothing to do with infant sleep safety.

After discounting the irrelevant websites, the researchers found that about 61 percent of the websites provided information that was in line with the recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The search phrases that yielded the most accurate information were "infant cigarette smoking," "infant sleep position" and "infant sleep surface." The search terms that resulted in the most inaccurate information were "pacifier infant," "infant home monitor" and "infant co-sleeping."

Internet searches using these key phrases most often sent users to links to company or special-interest groups, retail product reviews and educational websites, the researchers said.

After analyzing the content available, they noted that government websites were about 80 percent accurate, and organizational websites were about 73 percent accurate.

Blogs, retail product reviews, and individuals' websites most often provided incorrect information on infant sleep safety. Blogs were only about 31 percent accurate. Retail product reviews were only about 36 percent accurate, and personal websites were about 46 percent correct.

The study's authors advise health care providers to provide patients and caregivers with a list of updated websites that accurately reflect the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendations on infant sleep safety.

Hubble sees a ten billion year stellar dance

ScienceDaily (Aug. 4, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope offers a delightful view of the crowded stellar encampment called Messier 68, a spherical, star-filled region of space known as a globular cluster. Mutual gravitational attraction amongst a cluster's hundreds of thousands or even millions of stars keeps stellar members in check, allowing globular clusters to hang together for many billions of years.

Astronomers can measure the ages of globular clusters by looking at the light of their constituent stars. The chemical elements leave signatures in this light, and the starlight reveals that globular clusters' stars typically contain fewer heavy elements, such as carbon, oxygen and iron, than stars like the Sun. Since successive generations of stars gradually create these elements through nuclear fusion, stars having fewer of them are relics of earlier epochs in the Universe. Indeed, the stars in globular clusters rank among the oldest on record, dating back more than 10 billion years.

More than 150 of these objects surround our Milky Way galaxy. On a galactic scale, globular clusters are indeed not all that big. In Messier 68's case, its constituent stars span a volume of space with a diameter of little more than a hundred light-years. The disc of the Milky Way, on the other hand, extends over some 100,000 light-years or more.

Messier 68 is located about 33,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Hydra (the female water snake). French astronomer Charles Messier notched the object as the sixty-eighth entry in his famous catalogue in 1780.

Hubble added Messier 68 to its own impressive list of cosmic targets in this image using the Wide Field Camera of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. The image, which combines visible and infrared light, has a field of view of approximately 3.4 by 3.4 arcminutes.

Simple Steps For Your Home Improvement Projects - Social Lux

Before rolling paint onto walls or ceilings, cut in the edges with a brush. Tape off trim, moldings, windows, ceiling edges and fixtures. By painting the few inches closest to the edges using a brush, you do not have to roll right up to these obstacles which may prove too cumbersome with a full-sized paint roller.

Cleaning up always needs to be on your mind while making home improvements. Having garbage in the way is going to slow you down tremendously. Always have a trashcan or dumpster set up so that you can remove the debris as you?re working. This will make your efforts go much smoother,as well as being, clean and efficient.

To get home improvement ideas you may not have otherwise, visit a hardware store and just window shop for an hour. Even in home hardware, there are constantly new products and technologies, and new applications come with them. Just stroll the aisles with your hands in your pocket for an hour and soak it all in. Go home and mull it over, mentally placing items in your home, and then go back for the perfect project.

Older awnings over porches and windows can greatly detract from the appearance of your home. By removing them, you are updating your house with a more modern look that allows its distinctive character to shine through. Furthermore, you will find that more natural light enters your house through the windows, brightening the mood.

When painting the exterior of your home, it is very important to buy high- quality paint. By choosing a paint which is superior in quality, your paint job will last much longer. Even though quality paint has a higher price tag, it will be more durable and it will cover the surface of your house more quickly and easily. It is better to spend a few extra dollars to buy the best paint than to have to repaint your house every five years because you bought the bargain-priced one.

Decals are a great facelift for boring furniture and appliances; getting them off is a different story. If you?re out of ideas on how to remove old decals from surfaces the following tip is sure to help. Spray the decals you wish to remove with WD-40 spray. Try to lift the edges to get the liquid underneath. Let it sit in the solution for a minute or two and then gently scrape the decal with an old credit card or a plastic knife.

Installing carpet can be a daunting task if done yourself, or an expensive task if you pay a professional to do it. Fortunately there is an alternative. Much like vinyl floor tiles, there are carpet tiles that exist. These too have adhesive backing that allows you to install them easily, and they look just like real sheet carpeting when installed.

Consider green alternatives to standard building materials when renovating or remodeling your home. Materials like cork and bamboo come from sustainable resources and are used to create flooring, furniture and other items that you can use to update your home in an environmentally conscious way. Using these materials is a great way to support eco-friendly practices and lessen your impact on the environment.

Before you begin your next home improvement project, take the time to assess the current state of your home. Walking through the residence and figuring out what projects are necessities will help you plan your time and allow you to be more efficient with your work. Any projects that aren?t immediately necessary can be saved for a later date.

Talking to a friend who is a contractor or does other work related to construction can often provide some helpful insights. They will have a good idea of what needs to be done for a certain project. They may even be willing to lend a hand for a difficult or tricky home improvement task.

If you are using a tank style hot water heater and do not have the money to replace it take a trip to your hardware store. You can buy an energy saving blanket to wrap around your tank to keep heat in and save you money on your energy or gas bill.

If the outside of your house isn?t appealing to you, then chances are your neighbors feel the same way. Look at your shutters, and see if they could use a new coat of paint or need straightening. Make sure your driveway is not in disrepair as this is what welcomes visitors to your home. You want it to be inviting.

Doing home improvement projects yourself can be fun and rewarding. The key is to find the proper information that will help map out a plan for your project, and follow it precisely from beginning to end. This will cut down on the errors that may crop up otherwise.
