Guerrilla Mom: No soup for you!

???? The food situation in our house is putting a real stress on our marriage.
???? By the food situation, I mean of course, that Lucien is the only one that gets fed anymore.

???? If being responsible for providing three square meals a day for a toddler has taught me anything, it's this;
adults don't require three square meals- ever.

???? At least I don't.? I'm not sure I ever will. ? Keeping a fridge stocked with enough booty for three? meals a day is almost impossible.? Especially in New York, where shopping involves also carrying all that crap home- and if you're me- up three flights of stairs. ?

???? Unfortunately, children can't sip coffee all day- and subsist on some pathetic meal, thrown together at 10 pm with whatever happens to be hanging around the fridge.? Also unfortunate, is the fact that my husband can't seem to do that either.? So I've been forced to change my habits.? I have to get to the grocery store at least once a week.

??? Getting to the grocery store once a week means that Lucien eats great- but not really anyone else.? I don't have enough time or energy to shop, or carry anything for anyone else. ? For breakfast,? he'll have? a whole wheat waffle with honey, or some Greek yogurt and fruit, or a cheese omelet.? His lunch consists of some manner of pasta with vegetables,? a ripe avocado and bananas.? And his dinner is usually a glorious mixture of fish, fresh veggies and potatoes.? He's quite the gourmand.

?? You know what I had for lunch today?? A handful of elbow pasta that I picked off of the floor after Lucien deemed it unworthy, and a half of an organic yogurt rice crisp bar for toddlers.? And apparently toddler food is fattening as fuck, because I'm not even losing any weight on this rejected-kiddie-food-starvation-diet.

?? My husband is getting pretty annoyed by this scenario.? He too, would like a home cooked meal every once in a while.? Pre-baby, we had this thing people refer to as "disposable income."? We would use it to have gourmet meals delivered to our house, several times a week.? It was awesome.? It is also a thing of the past, much like going to a movie, or going anywhere together at all-for that matter.

??? These are the types of things that people refer to as "extra stresses on a relationship" that happen after you have a child.? In the past, if my husband mentioned that we were running low on groceries, I'd probably just put in on my to-do list for the following day.? Now, a similar exchange goes something like this:

Husband:? Wow.? We really need groceries.
Me:? I'm not sure if you know this- but you actually don't need to have boobs to get into Pathmark.? They let men in, too.

Or:

Husband:? Wow.? We really need groceries.
Me:? I just went shopping today.
Husband: You bought Yo-baby's, sweet peas, elbow pasta, bananas, canned pears and "little fishies" fish sticks.
Me:? You can't fashion a meal out of that?

Yes, the food situation is putting a stress on our marriage.? But that's all I can say about it- the fish sticks are ready, and I'm exhausted.

Google Play must compete with Apple, Amazon for content marketing

It?s already been quite a week in the mobile world, with significant developments coming from both Android and iOS. Stealing a bit of Apple?s thunder, Google revealed Google Play, the new Android Market, just before Apple?s annual event kicks off today. With expectations for the next gen iPad to be revealed today, both Android and iOS emphasize their respective content marketplaces, growing around a broad selection of devices, apps and more.

Google Play?s release is more significant in concept than changes made to Android?s actual marketplace, accentuating the variety of content available to mobile users. It?s a branding move, extending the mobile content experience beyond apps to include Google?s e-bookstore, movie house and music service. Yes, these things were already wrapped into the Android Market, but it?s all a little more integrated now. Buy a game on your desktop, and you?ll find it available on your smartphone. Your content is centralized in one place, regardless of what device you?re using.

A push for premium content purchases

The revamped Google Play is competing with the iTunes App Store and the Amazon Appstore in a whole new way, reiterating the content angle and presenting a cohesive marketplace to encourage purchases. But with the possible unveiling of the iPad 3 today, Apple may be upping the ante on its content offerings as well. A new Catalogs category was introduced to the App Store last night, hinting at a possible announcement related to interactive catalogs on the iPad as part of Apple?s big event. While the Catalogs launch seems to be premature, considering it has no popular apps listed and has yet to appear in all categories for the App Store, it?s conjectured that Catalogs may be a way to show off the Retina Display expected for the next gen iPad. Apple?s made quite an impact in digital retail, completely revolutionizing how we buy media, from music to publications, reshaping industries around a mobile-centric distribution channel.

Now that we?ve established Android and iOS and dominating players in the OS realm, the battle moves on to mobile content marketplaces. And for good reason. Mobile content usage is up on both Android and iOS, with 74 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers using text messaging on their device, up 2.8 percentage points since January 2012, while 48.6 percent downloaded apps (up 4.8 percentage points), reports comScore. Browser usage is also on the rise, increasing by 4.5 percentage points to 48.5 percent of mobile subscribers, while gaming occupies 31.8 percent, up 2.6 percentage points. And mobile music? It?s up 3.3 percentage points, taking up 24.5 percent of the mobile market.

Android-Apple peace talks?

But perhaps the biggest ?change? in mobile news this week (so far) is Apple?s softening heart. Apple is reportedly negotiating licensing deals with Android manufacturers, taking a cue from Microsoft to merely earn royalties from patent use instead of redundant court battles. The Register attributes Apple?s latest tactic to Steve Jobs? death, saying the path is now clear for Apple-Android peace talks. Apple could earn up to $15 per Android device sold, extending the iPhone maker?s potential revenue far beyond its own limited device lineup. It could also put increasing pressure on Android OEMs, which may have to increase device prices to cover the rising licensing costs to competing platforms.

Federal budget deficit to dip to $1.1T, CBO says

(AP) ? The government will run a $1.1 trillion deficit in the fiscal year that ends in September, a slight dip from last year but still very high by any measure, according to a budget report released Tuesday.

The Congressional Budget Office report also says that annual deficits will remain in the $1 trillion range for the next several years if Bush-era tax cuts slated to expire in December are extended, as commonly assumed ? and if Congress is unable to live within the tight "caps" the lawmakers themselves placed on agency budgets last year.

The report is yet another reminder of the perilous fiscal situation the government is in, but it's commonly assumed that President Barack Obama and lawmakers in Congress will be able to accomplish little on the deficit issue during an election year. The report was slightly more pessimistic than CBO's most recent projections last summer and would mean the fourth straight year of trillion-dollar-plus deficits.

The recent wave of shocking, trillion-dollar-plus deficits has been largely a product of the recent deep recession and the slower-than-hoped recovery. The jolt to the economy has made a permanent dent in revenue estimates but the budget crunch will get even worse with the retirement of the Baby Boom generation and the resulting strain of Social Security and Medicare.

The report prompted a familiar wave of statements from lawmakers casting blame on the other for the fiscal mess.

"Four straight years of trillion-dollar deficits, no credible plan to lift the crushing burden of debt," said House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., "The president and his party's leaders have fallen short in their duty to tackle our generation's most pressing fiscal and economic challenges."

"We will not solve this problem unless both sides, Democrats and Republicans, are willing to move off their fixed positions and find common ground," said Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, D-N.D. "Republicans must be willing to put revenue on the table."

Republicans acknowledge that Obama inherited a budget mess and an economy in recession, but they say he's done little to try to keep his 2009 promise to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term.

"We know that President Obama's policies have failed to produce the economic growth needed to pay down these massive deficits that are creating uncertainty, preventing economic recovery, and harming job creation," said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. "When something doesn't work, you change it. Let's try something new."

The CBO study also predicts modest economic growth of 2 percent this year and forecasts that the unemployment rate will be 8.9 percent on Election Day. That is based on an assumption that President Barack Obama will fail to win renewal of payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits through the end of the year.

That jobless rate is higher than the rates that contributed to losses by Presidents Jimmy Carter (7.5 percent) and George H.W. Bush (7.4 percent). The agency also predicts that unemployment will average 9.1 percent in 2013 and remain at 7 percent or above through 2015.

CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf, however, told reporters that extending the two percentage point cut in Social Security payroll taxes would only lift the economy by perhaps one-fourth of a percentage point this year and would likely yield only a 0.1 to 0.2 percentage point drop in the jobless rate.

The agency's budget projections are worse than those issued last summer, in large part because its views on the economy are more pessimistic now. Last August, CBO predicted a $953 billion deficit for 2012 fiscal year. Corporate tax receipts are sharply lower than anticipated last year.

On the economy as a whole, CBO now predicts 2 percent growth from the fourth quarter of 2011 to the fourth quarter of this year, a 0.7 percentage point drop from its August numbers. Its predictions of the jobless rate are 0.4 percent higher.

"We have not had a period of such persistently high unemployment since the Depression," Elmendorf said.

The new figures also show that last summer's budget and debt pact has barely made a dent in the government's fiscal woes.

The pact imposed $2.1 trillion in spending cuts over 10 years, but lawmakers are already talking about easing across-the-board spending cuts required under the agreement. The modified estimates predict $11 trillion in accumulated deficits over the 2013-2022 if the Bush-era cuts in taxes on income, investments, large estates and on families with children are renewed. Obama has proposed largely extending them, but allowing them to expire for upper-income taxpayers.

Extending the full range of the Bush tax cuts costs $5.4 trillion over the coming decade, CBO says. Elmendorf said allowing tax rates to increase for families making more than $250,000 a year as Obama has proposed would shave more than $1 trillion from the 10-year costs of extending the tax cuts.

Last year, Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, tried but failed to reach a "grand bargain" on the deficit, an effort that got hung up over taxes and cuts to major benefit programs like Medicare. A subsequent attempt by a congressional "supercommittee" to find smaller saving sputtered over the same issues.

What's left is a heap of unfinished business that comes to a head at the end of the year: expiring tax cuts and painful across-the-board cuts to the Pentagon and many domestic programs. To top it off, another politically toxic increase in the debt limit will have to be passed by Congress at some point early next year.

The deficit would require the government to borrow 30 cents of every dollar it spends. Put another way, the deficit will reach 7 percent of the size of the economy, a slight dip from last year's 8.7 percent of gross domestic product.

The CBO report shows that the deficit dilemma would largely be solved if the tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 ? and renewed in 2010 through the end of this year ? were allowed to lapse. Under that scenario, the deficit would drop to $585 billion in 2013 and to $220 billion in 2017.

But expiration of those tax cuts would slam the economy, CBO said, bringing growth down to a paltry 1.1 percent next year. However, the economy would quickly rebound in 2014 and beyond.

Obama is scheduled to release his 2013 budget on Feb. 13.
